Thematic Comparison of The Lottery and Hypocrisy

Poetry: Hypocrisy

by Jay O'Toole

Hypocrisy is just an act,
I very firmly feel,
I make a show of what I lack,
preventing what is real!

"How can this be?"
you want to know,Well,
let me tell you true!
The meaning of the word will show,
a side you never knew!

"What word you ask?"
Well, let me say,"Hypocrisy!" again,
That when you see it's full display,
You'll know in us there's sin!

Hypocrisy is lived and loved,
by actors every day,
Their jobs exist with REAL removed,
Their work becomes their play!

I hope these thoughts don't sound intense,
to those who give relief,
To those of us with lives immense,
whose hopes are oft beneath...

We know the truth that Carrey's Jim,
and Foster's much with Jo,
It's known when e'en the Pickin's Slim,
and Olsen's got to GO!

What is this truth that lights the face,
and strengthens every spine?'
Ti's simply this...
An Act has place,Recharging the sublime!

Thematic Comparison of The Lottery and Hypocrisy

The short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is an ironic story about a yearly event called the lottery which takes place in a small town. The actual purpose of the lottery is to select one person randomly to be stoned by family and friends as a sacrifice. The poem Hypocrisy by Jay O'Toole uses a different form of literature to state that it is hypocrisy that makes people hide themselves and lose the search of the truth. In the story The Lottery and the poem Hypocrisy, it is clearly shown that the hypocrisy leads to serious problems to our society. In the story The Lottery, the author shows that the hypocrisy which results in the weakness in human individuals is harmful to the society. The poem Hypocrisy also presents that the hypocrisy which makes people to be out of the truth is a "canker" to our society. The lottery proves the statement by portraying the acting of the people in town during the lottery. "The lottery was conducted--as were the square dances, the teen club, the Halloween program." The lottery is such a big event in the village, however, people actually do not enjoy it at all. They are not thrilled or excited, instead, they are nervous and disgusted. This is shown in the text:"For a minute, no one moved, and then all the slips of paper were opened. Suddenly, all the women began to speak at once, saying. 'Who is it?''Who's got it?'..." Although they are not comfortable with it, people continuously feign that they are satisfied and pleased. Some people come up with an idea to stop the lottery, but no one goes for it. People in town fail to speak out the true feeling as well as to get a chance to end the tragedy of killing one as a sacrifice every year. The hypocrisy leads to a cruel killing of an innocent person. It is strongly shown that a severe social problem is caused by the hypocrisy. On the other hand, the poem Hypocrisy starts proving its theme with the vivid explanation of the word "hypocrisy". "Hypocrisy is lived and loved, by actors every day. Their jobs exist with REAL removed, Their work becomes their play!" There is no more truth existed when hypocrisy is fully filled into the worlds of people. Everyone could be a perfect actor, otherwise, no one could distinguish the truth and lies. They balance themselves on the narrow line between truth and falsehood by a careful act. In addition, the author writes in the text: "'What word you ask?' Well, let me say, 'Hypocrisy!' again, That when you see it's full display,You'll know in us there's sin!" It shows that sometimes people are hypocritical and deceptive in order to cover all the manner of sins. In the poem, it is clearly proved that hypocrisy not only leads to the full display of human nature, but also brings touble to the society. In summary, in spite of the two different literary forms, both of the texts state that the hypocrisy which is relevant to our society today leads to severe problems to our society.

Thesis Comparison of What TV Does To Kids and Television's Impact on Kids

Magazine Article:
Television's Impact on Kids
http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/parents/television/tv_impact_kids.cfm

Summary:
Television is one of the most prevalent media influences in kids' lives. How much impact TV has on children depends on many factors: how much they watch, their age and personality, whether they watch alone or with adults, and whether their parents talk with them about what they see on TV. The magazine article Television's Impact on Kids basically illustrates the negative impact that television has on children including television violence, effects on healthy child development and sexual content.

In the essay What TV Does To Kids and the magazine article Television's Impact on Kids, it is clearly shown that television has the potent influence on the beliefs, values, and behaviour of the young. Firstly, the essay What TV Does To Kids shows that television violence tends to produce aggressive behaviour among the young. This is also seen in the outside media Television's Impact on Kids. In the essay, it shows the result of 50 most comprehensive studies involving 10 thousand children from every possible background is that T.V. Violence is both a mental-health problem and an environmental issue. From the outside media Television's Impact on Kids, it shows that researchers have identified three potential responses to television violence in children: increased fear, desensitization to real-life violence, and increased aggressive behaviour. Both of the texts clearly prove that television violence has negative impacton the behaviour of the young. Secondly, the negative impact on learning is present in both of the texts. In the essay What TV Does To Kids, it explains that "The children of T.V, enjoy a more sophisticated knowledge of a far larger world. They are likely to possess richer vocabularies, albeit with only a superficial comprehension of what the words mean."(Waters,1) However, this is also shown in the outside media. In the article Television's Impact on Kids, it states that television can affect learning and school performance if it cuts into the time kids need for learning new things through activities such as reading, exploring nature, learning about music or participating in sports. Kids always think that what they learned from T.V. is enough but the fact is that they only reach the superficial explanation of those knowledge. Both of the texts are strong evidence of the negative impact that television causes on the beliefs of learning of the young. In addition, the essay What TV Does To Kids shows that television has the potent influence on the values of young by clarifying that too much T.V. instills a withdrawal from direct involvement in real life experience. In the essay, it explains that "What television basically teaches children is passivity, it creates the illusion of having been somewhere and done something and seen something, when in fact they've been sitting at home." (Waters,1) It's seen from the essay that television invisibly changes the kids' values of the actual lives and experience. On the other hand, the article Television's Impact on Kids presents the bad effect caused by too much television on kids' values with showing the sexual content that television brings to the young. In the article, it explains that "Television can be a powerful tool for educating young people about the responsibilities and risks of sexual behaviour, such issues are seldom mentioned or dealt with in a meaningful way in programs containing sexual content." The sexual content kids gained from television is not supposed to be gotten at a young age. It's a negative factor to their values about the opposite sex. To sum up, both of the texts distinctly show that television has the influence on the kids' values. In conclusion, both of the essay and the article respectively state the theme that television has the potent influence on the beliefs, values, and behaviour of the young.
